Fri, 13 August 2010 - Wed, 8 September 2010A Sociable Art Experience - Milford Galleries Exhibition, Dunedin
Join us for a preview, artist talk and book signing by Wayne Barrar, who will be in attendance at an advance preview of his exhibition at Milford Gallery, Dunedin on Friday 13th August from 5.30pm.
Wayne will be signing copies of his recently released book ’Wayne Barrar: An Expanding Subterra’. Copies will also be available for purchase on the night and retail for $55.
His exhibition will run at Milford Galleries, Dunedin from 14th August to 8th September.
Wayne Barrar: "Most of my work is centred on the impact on land of the consequences of shifting cultural practices. Occasionally I will venture into the laboratory, as a place of change, in order to investigate human intervention at a ‘micro’ level. At other times I may revisit historical imagery or sites as a reference point…. In order to deal with the complexities and ironies inherent in the relationship between people and the environment, my work has evolved into a number of series – some finite, others ongoing. They may vary in approach and process, but in all of them the central consideration is this inter-relationship between culture and nature in an increasingly complex society."
Wayne Barrar born in Christchurch 1957 gained a Bachelor of Science from The University of Canterbury in 1979, a Post Graduate Diploma of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland in 1996 and a Masters in Design from Massey University in 2005. He currently works as the Associate Professor and Director of Photography, School of Fine Arts at Massey University, Wellington. He has been awarded a number of international and national art residencies and grants. Barrar’s first survey book ‘Shifting Nature” was published in 2001 by University of Otago Press and in 2010 a major publication by Dunedin Public Art Gallery ‘Wayne Barrar, An Expanding Subterra’ accompanied his significant touring exhibition of the same name. His works have been exhibited in a number of public galleries around New Zealand including the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, Wellington, the City Gallery, Wellington and the Sarjeant Art Gallery, Wanganui. He has exhibited internationally, around the USA, as well as in Hong Kong. Barrar’s works are held in public galleries, private and corporate collections in New Zealand and abroad.

The Story
Set in 1975 during the final days of the American occupation of Saigon, Miss Saigon is an epic love story about the relationship between an American GI and a young Vietnamese woman.
Kim is working in a sleazy Saigon night club owned by a notorious wheeler-dealer known as 'The Engineer'. John, an American GI, buys his friend Chris the services of Kim for the night. That night will change their lives forever.
Three years later, the US Army has fled Saigon. Chris has returned to America and, believing Kim is dead, marries an American women named Ellen.
However, unbeknown to Chris, Kim is alive, has left Saigon and is living in poverty with her three year old son, Tam, in Bangkok. When John tells Chris that Kim is alive and has bore Chris a son, Chris and Ellen go to Asia.
When Kim learns that Chris is in Bangkok with his new wife, all her hopes to be reunited with him disappear. She is desperate for her son to have a future in America with his father and will make the ultimate sacrifice to achieve this

Tramps/ Biking
I will be organising a MONTHLY Day Tramp.
We get to see so many beautiful spots in and around Dunedin and the weather hasn't let us down in 6 months.
You will need a good level of fitness for the tramps.
Location is often not decided until the day due to weather reports. We go out for the day leaving at 10.30 and usually home by 4-5pm. We always stop for a lunch break and admire the views. It is a fantastic day and if you love to walk you will love it!
We give a week's notice for Bike Club since it is often not a set day. We usually meet between 10.30 - 11am, stop for lunch and end the day with either a wine or coffee.....
So if you'd be keen to join the Bike Club please let Julie know and she can keep you in the loop as cycling activities are arranged.
To sign up for the Tramp or the Bike Club contact Julie 0274788841

I have found an amazing artist (Doug) who will give small groups of 4-6 art lessons. So if you have 3-5 friends who are interested in art then let me know. The lessons will be in your own home so you would rotate houses. Each lesson would be $18 per person.
If you wish I could get the group together which would be a great way to meet other like minded people.
