Thu, 26 August 2010 - Sun, 12 September 2010A Sociable Art Experience - ArtBay Gallery Exhibition
Sociable Club art enthusiasts are invited to an exclusive preview of a new exhibition at ArtBay Gallery in The Mountaineer Queenstown. Enjoy canapes and a glass of Amisfield Arcadia on arrival and browse the works on exhibition.
New works from Simon and John explore the cupboards, draws and shelves of NZ history, they run current and nostalgic ideas, themes and icons into each other.
...A deconstructed rusty shed from John adorns some 7 meters of wall, using corrugated panels to narrate the decades of our history to present day. Simon lets monuments and portraits sit amongst more contemporary settings to tell his tales.
With both subtle and obvious use of Kiwi icons within their work, both artists have captured the essence and their affections for their home country New Zealand. The joint exhibition of works by Simon Morrison-Deaker, and John Shewry are bound to delight and intrigue and promises to strike a chord in the patriotic part of us all.

Fri, 3 September 2010 - Wed, 29 September 2010A Sociable Art Experience - Milford Galleries Exhibition - Neil Dawson and Christine Cathie
The Sociable Club has been invited to attend ARTIST TALKS by Neil Dawson and Christine Cathie at the preview of their new exhibitions at Milford Gallery, Queenstown on Friday 3rd September.
Neil will speak to images and dialogues surrounding a number of his public works from 6:00pm and at 6:45pm we will move downstairs and Christine will introduce her new body of work. This is a great opportunity to meet both artists and hear about their practice, we hope you will attend.
From Antarctic inspired works to sweeping darts, clouds and ferns, from willow pattern plates to a house of cards, showcasing in the Upstairs Gallery Neil Dawson ‘Five Years’ is a culmination of important works, reflecting why he continues to be one of New Zealand’s most significant sculptors. With a career spanning over thirty years and an extraordinary number of awards, public and private commissions and exhibitions, the Art Laureate‘s illusionistic steel sculptures are distinctive, amusing and intelligent.
In the downstairs Gallery, curving, folding and wavering forms of cast glass play with space, volume and colour. Christine Cathie’s ‘Amorphisms’ twist and turn as they capture and reflect light and give the feeling of motion and dance.

Thu, 9 September 2010The Sociable Book Club - September
Jacqui Moir is coordinating the book club which is an informal get together where members share their thoughts and ideas on interesting books and enjoy a bit of food, wine (or water) great company and a good laugh!
At each meeting, the group decide which book to read and members source their own copy. At the following meeting the book along with our views and reflections on it are discussed and debated. When we all feel we've discussed the book enough, then the next book is chosen. Everyone brings along a little something to eat and drink.
The Sociable Book Club have chosen their 'read' for September in advance to give all members plenty of time to secure their copy of the book.
They've chosen 'Mr Pip' by Lloyd Jones for September
'You cannot pretend to read a book. Your eyes will give you away. So will your breathin...g. A person entranced by a book simply forgets to breathe. The house can catch alight and a reader deep in a book will not look up until the wallpaper is in flames.' Bougainville. 1991.
'A small village on a lush tropical island in the South Pacific. Eighty-six days have passed since Matilda's last day of school as, quietly, war is encroaching from the other end of the island. When the villagers' safe, predictable lives come to a halt, Bougainville's children are surprised to find the island's only white man, a recluse, re-opening the school. Pop Eye, aka Mr Watts, explains he will introduce the children to Mr Dickens. Matilda and the others think a foreigner is coming to the island and prepare a list of much needed items. They are shocked to discover their acquaintance with Mr Dickens will be through Mr Watts' inspiring reading of Great Expectations. But on an island at war, the power of fiction has dangerous consequences. Imagination and beliefs are challenged by guns. Mister Pip is an unforgettable tale of survival by story; a dazzling piece of writing that lives long in the mind after the last page is finished.'

With their own primetime TV Series and Movie they are truly original entertainers and one of the few NZ acts which can undoubtedly be cal...led a cultural institution.
They have performed around the world for more than 25 years and continue to delight audiences from the alternative to the mainstream. No other act has such unique cross-over appeal, and are equally at home performing in front of a gay/lesbian audience or in a Rugby stadium as opening match entertainment.

Fri, 15 October 2010A Sociable Trip to Le Sud!!!
This specially commissioned play assumes that the French successfully colonised the South Island in 1839 and South Zealand or ‘Le Sud’ became an independent French-speaking nation. Today ‘Le Sud’ is a prosperous socialist country where people work only 30 hours a week, enjoy long wine-fuelled lunches, and the popular Prim...e Minister, Francois Duvauchelle, is a renowned womaniser.
The English-speaking citizens of the North Island are far less happy. North Zealanders work long hours for little reward, their free-market experiment ended in disaster, and race relations are at rock bottom. Starved of much-needed electricity, North Zealand lives in permanent recession.
Le Sud is the story of a delegation from North Zealand, led by Prime Minister Jim Petersen, who travel south to the beautiful chateau at Wanaka au Lac to persuade their rich neighbours to provide them with cheap electricity.
Warning – this play contains many hilarious jabs at the political, sporting, religious, racial and cultural values that New Zealanders hold dear!
Comments on previous Dave Armstrong plays:
“An agonisingly funny comedy of insight.”
“The play is full of topical one-liners that make fun of both Left and Right.”
“It’s the sort of play that reminds us why theatre was invented.”
Doors open 6:30pm, show starts 7:00pm.
Cost: $36
